Curaçao with Kids: Tips, Beaches & Activities
Curaçao may be the most relaxed, kid-friendly island in the Caribbean. Direct flights from Amsterdam, calm bays with clear water instead of rough ocean surf, a safe atmosphere where kids can roam freely, and a developed infrastructure throughout. As hosts of a luxury villa in Jan Thiel we welcome families year-round — from babies in a sling to confident teenagers diving in and out of the pool all day. Below you'll find everything you need for a successful family holiday on Curaçao, with the honest tips we'd give our own friends.
Why Curaçao is so well suited for kids
Three things make Curaçao the ideal family destination. First, the climate: around 28 °C year-round, very little rain outside of October to January, and the constant trade wind keeps things pleasant. Second, the sea: almost all beaches sit inside a bay, so the water is calm and children can paddle, snorkel and swim without dangerous currents. Third, the culture: Curaçao is safe, infrastructurally strong enough to walk to the supermarket with a baby, pick up milk for a bottle, and order a healthy meal at a beach club.
Flights from Europe take 9 to 11 hours. The time difference is 5 or 6 hours (depending on summer time), which in practice means kids wake up early during the first few days — perfect for breakfast by the pool and an outing before the hottest part of the day.
The best family beaches on Curaçao
Not every Curaçao beach is equally kid-friendly. Some have strong undercurrents, others are rocky or hard to reach. These are our favourites for families:
- Jan Thiel Beach— right around the corner from Villa Vidalou, 2 minutes on foot. Shallow entry, sun loungers under palms, beach clubs with kids' menus and a small aquarium where children can watch fish swim from the water's edge.
- Mambo Beach— a 10-minute drive. Long boardwalk with shops, ice cream parlours and a children's pool. Busier and livelier than Jan Thiel, ideal for teenagers.
- Cas Abao — 45 minutes drive west. Beautiful white sand, clear water and a professional beach facility with showers, loungers and a restaurant. Low entrance fee.
- Playa Porto Mari— shallow cove, locally famous for the two "twin pigs" that wander along the beach each afternoon. Unforgettable for children.
- Playa Lagun — a small intimate bay. Snorkel straight from the shore with sea turtles that come to graze here daily. One of the most magical experiences for kids 6+.

Kid-friendly activities
Beyond the beach there are plenty of activities children genuinely love. Our top six, with age guidance:
- Curaçao Sea Aquarium (all ages) — close to Jan Thiel. Not the largest aquarium in the world, but one where you can watch dolphins being fed, touch starfish and pass flamingos along the path.
- Day trip to Klein Curaçao (from age 5) — catamaran tour to an uninhabited island with white sand, snorkelling with turtles and lunch aboard. Choose a large-catamaran tour rather than a speedboat — much more comfortable for children prone to motion sickness.
- Hato Caves(from age 6) — cool guided cave tour with bats and dramatic limestone formations. Perfect for a hot afternoon — it's pleasantly cool inside.
- Shete Boka Park (from age 8) — rugged coastline on the north side with natural blowholes where the ocean shoots up between rocks. Walk close to the edge with care.
- Ostrich Farm (all ages) — feed the ostriches, see crocodiles and lunch at the farm restaurant.
- Willemstad boat tour (all ages) — a boat ride through the Sint Anna Bay with views of the colourful trading houses. Combine with an ice cream on the pontoon bridge.

Snorkelling with kids — from what age?
Snorkelling is the holiday highlight for many kids on Curaçao. From about age 5, with a life vest and fins, children can join comfortably. The island's calm bays — Tugboat, Directors Bay, Playa Lagun — are ideal beginner spots: clear water, little current and colourful fish right from the shore. Bring your own snorkel and dive mask set from home (the right kids' size is not always in stock locally), and buy a UV swim shirt on arrival — the Caribbean sun is unforgiving on children's skin.
Eating out with kids
The Curaçao restaurant scene is very child-friendly. Almost all beach clubs offer kids' menus, and since most venues are outdoors, children can play between courses. Our favourites with kids:
- Zanzibar Beach (Jan Thiel) — loungers on the sand, an in-house mini playground and delicious pizzas.
- Hemingway Beach (Mambo Beach) — burgers, salads and savoury pancakes with direct sea views.
- Tinto (Jan Thiel) — Italian, great for kids from age 6, with an atmospheric garden.
- Karakter Beach (Coral Estate) — for families with older children who can swim independently during a long lunch.

Practical tips for travelling with kids
- Hire a car with a child seat. A car is essential for flexibility — especially for the west side of the island. Reserve a child seat well in advance with reputable rentals such as AB Carrental or Active Car Rental.
- Plan around the midday heat. Between 12 and 3 pm the sun is at its strongest. Plan pool time at home, a siesta or an indoor activity like the Sea Aquarium or Hato Caves.
- Bring sunscreen SPF 50+. Good sunscreen is expensive on the island. For kids we recommend a mineral zinc-based cream and a UV swim shirt for the water.
- Plan one rest day a week. A day at home by the private pool works wonders for exhausted kids. Our villa has a fenced pool with a palapa — perfect for lazy afternoons between busier outings.
- Supermarkets: Centrum (on Caracasbaaiweg) and Mangusa Hypermarket carry all familiar European brands — food, diapers, baby formula. No surprises.
- Travel medicine kit:Bring sunscreen, children's paracetamol, after-sun and ear plugs. Everything is available on the island, but more expensive than at home.
Why a villa beats a hotel with kids
A hotel room with two adults and two children quickly feels cramped — especially on a tropical island where you spend many hours indoors during the heat. A villa gives everyone space: separate bedrooms for the kids, a kitchen for quick lunches, a private pool that's always free and safe, and outdoor space where you can dine in the evening without worrying about toddler noise. At Villa Vidalou we offer 3 bedrooms (each with its own bathroom), a safely fenced pool and a palapa with lounge sofa — ideal for families up to 6 people. Read our villa vs hotel room comparison for more practical benefits.
When is the best time to travel with kids?
Curaçao works for family holidays year-round. European school breaks — spring, May, summer and Christmas — are popular. The upside: you can spend the entire holiday on the island without worrying about storms. The downside: prices are higher and villas book up fast. If you are flexible and travel with smaller, pre-school children, May, June or September are excellent alternatives — quieter beaches and lower prices. FAQ — Curaçao with kids
Is Curaçao safe for kids? Yes. The island is politically stable, healthcare is Dutch-standardised, and tourist areas like Jan Thiel are quiet and well looked after. Our guests with children travel around the island very comfortably.
Do I need vaccinations? No mandatory vaccinations are required from Europe or North America. DTP and hepatitis A are recommended by travel health services. Always consult your GP or a travel health clinic before departure.
Can I drink the tap water? Yes. Tap water on Curaçao is excellent (distilled from seawater) and entirely safe for children. No bottle lugging required.
Are there mosquitoes? Limited — the dry trade winds keep mosquito levels much lower than on other Caribbean islands. There are more in the rainy months (October-January). Bring repellent for the evenings.
Do you provide baby gear at the villa? On request we provide a travel cot and high chair free of charge for your stay. Just let us know when you book.
