When to Visit Curaçao? Best Time to Travel Month by Month
Curaçao is a true year-round destination. Temperatures sit between 28 and 31 degrees Celsius all year, the sea is always warm, and the sun shows up almost every single day. Still, every month has its own character — in rainfall, crowds, prices and atmosphere. As hosts of a luxury villa in Jan Thiel we welcome guests throughout the year. Below you'll find what to expect month by month and when Curaçao suits you best.
Curaçao's climate at a glance
Curaçao lies just above the equator, outside the official hurricane belt. That means: stable temperatures, a constant trade wind, and relatively little rain compared to other Caribbean islands. The annual average temperature is 28 °C, sea temperature stays around 27 °C year-round, and roughly 550 mm of rain falls each year — most of it in short tropical showers between October and January.
In practice there are two seasons: a dry season (February through September) and a wet season (October through January). But even during the wet season the sun shines on most days — a 20-minute shower in the late afternoon is normal and the sky clears right after.
January & February — dry, fresh and high season
January is the tail end of the wet season; from late January it turns noticeably drier. February is one of our favourite months: pleasant 28 °C, very little rain, fresh trade winds in the evening and intensely blue water. It's also peak season: Dutch and German guests escaping the European winter mean accommodations and rental cars are scarce and pricier. Book at least 4 to 6 months ahead for January and February.
March & April — driest and most stable months
March and April are statistically the driest months of the year. Expect sunny days, low humidity and minimal chance of rain. Temperatures climb towards 30 °C, the water is wonderful for diving in, and underwater visibility is excellent for snorkelling and diving at spots like Playa Knip and Directors Bay. Easter and European spring breaks briefly push prices up, but the weeks around them are quieter and more attractively priced.
May & June — the perfect mix of weather and value
If you're not tied to school holidays, May and June may well be the best months to visit Curaçao. The sea is glass-clear, it's dry and sunny, and prices are significantly lower than during school breaks. Restaurants in Jan Thiel and Willemstad are calm, you don't need to reserve anywhere, and you'll always find space on the beach. It's also our personal favourite time to welcome guests — everything runs at the most relaxed pace.
July & August — summer holidays, busy and warm
The European summer holidays are the peak moment of the year. Many Dutch and German families pick Curaçao as their summer destination because the island sits outside the hurricane belt and stays relatively dry. Expect temperatures up to 32 °C, a strong trade wind that keeps the heat pleasant, and lively restaurants and beach clubs. Book 6 to 9 months ahead for July and August — the best villas, including ours, are nearly always fully booked. Plan activities early in the day; popular beaches fill up after 11 a.m.
September & October — low season with sharp prices
September and early October are the quietest months. It's warm, humid, and the first tropical showers start to appear, but it remains a great time to travel. The upside: sharper prices, empty beaches and short waiting times for activities like catamaran trips or a day on Klein Curaçao. The downside: a few restaurants and tour operators take a short break. Our villa is open as always — check availability and rates and book with significant savings.
November & December — wettest months, but still plenty of sun
November and December are the wettest months, but "wet" is relative: most rain falls at night or in short showers during the day. In between, the sun shines abundantly. Vegetation is green and lush and the skies above Willemstad are spectacular. From mid-December the crowds return, with Christmas and New Year as new peak periods — book early if you want to come over the holidays. For travellers escaping the European cold, December is a fantastic month despite the rainfall.
Hurricane season: nothing to worry about
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Curaçao, however, lies far below the typical hurricane track — the last direct hurricane was Hazel in 1954. In practice we only notice a few extra rain showers when a storm is raging further north. For peace of mind we still recommend taking out travel and cancellation insurance if you book in this period.
Our three favourite travel windows
Based on the hundreds of guests we've hosted at Villa Vidalou, these are the three sweet spots:
- Late May to late June — driest period, empty beaches, sharp prices, few school holidays.
- First two weeks of September — quiet, warm, low-season pricing, perfect for couples.
- First two weeks of February — high-season atmosphere and perfect weather, but slightly less crowded outside the Dutch and German half-term breaks.
Frequently asked questions about the best time to travel
Which month gives the best price-to-quality ratio? May and June: sunny, dry and almost no tourist crowds.
Can I travel to Curaçao in summer with kids? Absolutely — Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt and the weather in July and August is reliably warm and sunny. Just book well in advance.
How much rain falls in November? On average 90 mm spread over 14 days — usually short showers in the late afternoon or at night. It's still an excellent month to travel.
When is underwater visibility at its best? March, April and May. Low wind speeds and little rain produce crystal-clear water at snorkelling spots like Playa Lagun and Directors Bay.
