Best Beaches in Curaçao
Curaçao is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water and stunning white-sand beaches. As residents of Jan Thiel, we know them all — from the beach around the corner to the remote gems on the west coast that you can only reach by hire car. These are our 8 favourites.
1. Jan Thiel Beach — right on the doorstep
Jan Thiel Beach is a 2-minute walk from Villa Vidalou and the most convenient beach for villa guests. It's a calm, family-friendly beach with clear water, a sandy bottom and a coral reef just offshore.
Zanzibar Beach Club and Papagayo are also right here, so you can swim and then have lunch or grab a cocktail straight afterwards. Parking is paid and gets busy in high season — arrive early if you want to secure a sun lounger.
2. Playa Knip (Groote Knip) — spectacular scenery
Playa Knip, also known as Groote Knip or Playa Kenepa Grandi, is considered by many to be Curaçao's most beautiful beach. Located on the north-west coast, it offers a dramatic panorama of white cliffs, palm trees and a bay in multiple shades of blue.
Snorkelling here is excellent — there are sea turtles, colourful fish and a healthy coral reef. Arrive early (before 9:30am) to get a good spot and beat the crowds. There are vendors on the beach selling snacks and drinks.
3. Klein Knip (Playa Kenepa Chiki) — a hidden gem
Right next to Groote Knip is Klein Knip, a much smaller but equally beautiful little beach. It has an intimate atmosphere, far fewer crowds and wonderfully clear water. Perfect if you're looking for peace and quiet away from the tourist trail.
There are few facilities (no parasols for hire), so bring your own gear. The walk from the car park to the beach takes just a few minutes and is absolutely worth it.
4. Cas Abao — the perfect beach day
Cas Abao is one of Curaçao's longest and most spacious beaches, on the south coast about 30 minutes' drive from Jan Thiel. It has a calm bay, an organised beach club with sun loungers, a restaurant and excellent snorkelling along the western edge.
Cas Abao is ideal for a full day at the beach — spend lunchtime at the beach restaurant, then spend another hour exploring the coral reef that stretches along the rocks on the side. There's an entry fee (small charge per person).
5. Playa Lagun — fishing village with character
Playa Lagun is a small beach tucked inside an enclosed bay surrounded by cliffs. It has an authentic feel — fishing boats are pulled up on the beach and the water is incredibly clear and calm. The coral reef is accessible straight from the shore.
This is a favourite with snorkellers who want to spot sea turtles. They're seen here almost daily. There's a small restaurant and a beach bar. Bear in mind that Playa Lagun is popular with divers too, so it can get busy.
6. Playa Porto Marie — snorkelling at its finest
Playa Porto Marie is one of the few beaches on Curaçao with a double beach — two bays side by side, separated by a rocky point. The coral reef here is exceptionally well-preserved and full of life.
There's a beach club with sun loungers, a restaurant and a bar. The entry to the reef is easy to find — swim towards the rocks on the right side of the beach. A perfect combination of relaxation and underwater exploration.
7. Playa Jeremi — an undiscovered pearl
Playa Jeremi is one of Curaçao's more remote beaches — no facilities, no beach bar, but an incredibly beautiful and quiet stretch of nature. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and the water is crystal clear.
Bring everything yourself: food, drinks and snorkel gear. The road in is unpaved but fine for a regular car. Perfect for anyone truly seeking peace and wanting to avoid the tourist circuit.
8. Directors Bay — paradise for snorkellers
Directors Bay is just a short drive from Jan Thiel and is known as one of the island's best snorkelling spots. It's a small, quiet bay with an incredibly rich coral reef full of colourful fish, sea fans and sometimes sea turtles.
There are no beach facilities, but it makes for a great snorkel outing from Jan Thiel — just a few minutes' drive from Villa Vidalou. Bring your own gear and allow an hour or two to explore the reef properly.
