Best Restaurants near Jan Thiel & on Curaçao

As residents of Jan Thiel, we eat out almost every week — from a quick beach lunch to a long dinner in Willemstad. These are the restaurants we return to again and again, and that we recommend to our guests with confidence.

1. Zanzibar Beach Club — iconic beachside dining

Zanzibar is Curaçao's most famous beach restaurant and is a 2-minute walk from Villa Vidalou. During the day it's a relaxed spot for lunch by the water — fresh fish, salads and excellent cocktails. Later in the afternoon the atmosphere comes alive and it becomes one of the liveliest spots on the island.

The sunsets here are iconic. Book a table for dinner, as Zanzibar fills up fast in high season. The seafood and grilled dishes are consistently excellent. An unmissable part of any stay in Jan Thiel.

2. Jan Thiel Culinary — fresh fish and Caribbean cuisine

Jan Thiel Culinary is one of our regular favourites in the area. The restaurant is known for its fresh fish and seafood, but the meat dishes are excellent too. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service friendly.

Perfect for a dinner out without driving far — it's about 5 minutes from the villa. Popular with both locals and visitors, which is always a good sign. Come early or book ahead, as there aren't many tables.

3. Gouverneur de Rouville — spectacular in Willemstad

The Gouverneur de Rouville is housed in a stunning colonial building on the harbour side of Otrobanda in Willemstad, overlooking the Handelskade. It has one of the most beautiful terraces on Curaçao — especially at night when the colourful facades reflect in the water.

The menu is international with local influences — try the keshi yena (stuffed Edam cheese, a traditional Curaçaoan dish) or the fresh fish of the day. After dinner, take a walk across the bridge for an evening stroll through Punda.

4. Plasa Bieu — authentic island food

Plasa Bieu is a covered market in the heart of Willemstad where local women prepare traditional Caribbean dishes. No fancy menu, no reservations — just walk up and point at what you want. Stobá (stew), kabritu (goat), funchi and fresh fish for just a few dollars.

This is the place for an authentic culinary experience you won't find anywhere else on Curaçao. Best at lunchtime, when all the pots are full and the atmosphere is most lively.

5. Pepito's — Mexican with a Caribbean twist

Pepito's is a popular restaurant combining Mexican cuisine with Caribbean ingredients. Think excellent tacos, nachos and guacamole, complemented by local fish and tropical sauces. The cocktails are generous and well priced.

A great choice if you fancy something other than fish — and popular with a younger crowd. On Friday and Saturday evenings there's live music. Book ahead at the weekend.

6. Bario Urban Street Food — hip and local

Bario is a trendy street food concept in Willemstad with a varied menu of smash burgers, sushi burritos, bao buns and local snacks. The atmosphere is lively, the prices are reasonable and the quality is consistently good.

Ideal for a casual night out with the group. The restaurant also has a great bar with local beers and cocktails. Popular with locals — always a sign the quality is right.

7. Seru Lounge — views over the island

Seru Lounge sits on a hilltop with a panoramic view over Willemstad and the bay. It's the perfect spot for a romantic dinner at sunset or a cocktail with an unforgettable view. The atmosphere is calm and elegant.

The menu is international with a good wine list. Definitely book ahead for a window table. The restaurant is also popular for special occasions and anniversary dinners.

8. Mundo Bizarro — eclectic and lively

Mundo Bizarro is an eclectic restaurant and bar in Willemstad with a wide-ranging menu — from fresh pasta and pizza to grilled fish and local dishes. The atmosphere is colourful, artistic and relaxed.

Perfect for an evening out that's a bit different from the standard beach restaurants. On several evenings a week there's live music or a DJ. Good for both an early dinner and a late night out.
