Snorkelling in Curaçao: the 8 best spots

Curaçao is home to one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Caribbean. The water is clear, warm and teeming with life — sea turtles, colourful reef fish, moray eels and octopuses are all part of a typical snorkelling trip. As residents of Jan Thiel, we know the best spots on the island. These are our favourites — from the beach at our doorstep to the most spectacular reefs further afield.

1. Directors Bay — best snorkelling right by Jan Thiel

Directors Bay is just a few minutes' drive from Villa Vidalou and is widely regarded as one of the finest snorkelling spots in Curaçao. The cove is small and quiet, with no beach bar or tourist crowds — just you and the reef.

The coral reef starts right at the waterline and descends to around 6 metres deep. Expect trumpetfish, parrotfish, sea urchins and, if you're lucky, a green sea turtle. Allow at least an hour and a half to explore the reef properly. There are no facilities, so bring your own water and snorkelling equipment.

Practical: Park at the Jan Thiel Beach Club and walk westward along the coastline. Directors Bay isn't signposted but is easy to find on Google Maps. Best time: early morning when the water is calmest.

2. Jan Thiel Beach — snorkelling right in front of the villa

Jan Thiel Beach itself has a coral reef accessible directly from the shore. Swim towards the rocks on the side of the bay to find a network of corals full of small fish. It's less intense than Directors Bay but perfect for a quick dip between other activities.

The advantage: just leave your gear on the sand and walk into the water. Ideal for children or first-time snorkellers discovering Curaçao's underwater world. The water is shallow and easy to navigate.

3. Playa Lagun — sea turtles guaranteed

If you do one thing in Curaçao, snorkel at Playa Lagun. This small beach tucked inside an enclosed bay on the west coast is the island's best spot for seeing sea turtles up close — they swim here nearly every day, unafraid and right alongside snorkellers.

The coral reef drops steeply along the bay's cliff walls. Even at a shallow depth you're treated to a rich underwater world. There's a small restaurant on the beach for a relaxed lunch afterwards.

Practical: Playa Lagun is about 35 minutes' drive from Jan Thiel. Combine it with a visit to Playa Knip or Klein Knip further along the coast. Go before 10:00 for the calmest conditions and best visibility.

4. Playa Porto Marie — double reef, double the fun

Playa Porto Marie is unique: two bays side by side, separated by a rocky outcrop, both with excellent coral reefs. The reef here is exceptionally well preserved and ranks among the most species-rich on the island. Look out for reef sharks, rays, moray eels and an abundance of colourful reef fish.

A beach club offers sun loungers, a restaurant and a bar. Snorkelling gear is available to hire on site, making it accessible even if you're travelling light. The beach is about 30 minutes' drive from Jan Thiel.

5. Mushroom Forest — an underwater forest of sponge coral

The Mushroom Forest is one of the most extraordinary snorkelling and diving sites in Curaçao. Mushroom-shaped corals, some over a metre tall, form a literal underwater forest. The sight is almost surreal.

The location sits along the west coast and is most easily reached via a local snorkel or diving tour. Ask dive operators on the island about a half-day trip to the Mushroom Forest — most know the spot well.

6. Cas Abao — long beach, big reef

Cas Abao is known as a beach-day destination, but on the western side of the beach lies an extensive coral reef that fewer visitors know about. Swim alongside the rocks on the left side of the bay for a gradual transition from sand to coral.

The advantage of Cas Abao: full facilities (restaurant, bar, showers, sun loungers) plus a fine reef. Perfect if you want to combine a relaxed beach day with an hour of snorkelling. A small entry fee applies.

7. Klein Curaçao — the ultimate snorkelling day trip

Klein Curaçao is the uninhabited island to the southeast of the main island. Reachable by catamaran on a day trip (roughly 2.5 hours each way), the reward is world-class underwater scenery: visibility up to 30 metres, reefs teeming with life, and often dolphins on the way there.

Several operators run day trips from Willemstad marina, including breakfast, lunch, snorkelling gear and an open bar. Book well in advance in high season — boats fill quickly. This is the most memorable snorkelling experience Curaçao offers.

8. Watamula — for the adventurous

Watamula sits on Curaçao's wild north coast at the island's western tip. Only suitable in calm seas and with an organised tour — waves can be substantial here. But when conditions align, you snorkel above one of the most pristine reefs on the island, with dramatic drop-offs and incredible biodiversity.

Ask local dive schools about tours to Watamula. Not for beginners, but for experienced snorkellers and divers it's an unforgettable experience.

Practical tips for snorkelling in Curaçao

Own gear or hire? Villa Vidalou provides snorkel masks and fins for all guests to use. Most beach clubs also rent equipment on site, though quality varies.

Sun cream: Use only reef-safe sunscreen, free from oxybenzone and octinoxate. Standard sunscreen causes significant coral damage. Reef-safe options are widely available in Curaçao's supermarkets.

Best time of day: Go early, before 10:00. The water is calmest, visibility is best and crowds are minimal. Afternoon swells can pick up on the west coast.

Don't touch: Never touch the coral. Coral grows just one centimetre per year and cannot recover from physical contact. Keep a respectful distance from sea turtles too — watching is fine, chasing is not.

Scuba diving: Want to go deeper? Curaçao has several professional dive schools offering PADI courses, fun dives and guided dives. Popular operators include Ocean Encounters, Atlantis Diving and Go West Diving. There's also a dive school at Papagayo Beach, just minutes from Jan Thiel.
