Curaçao Top Attractions: 15 Best Places to Visit

Curaçao is so much more than sun and beaches. The island has a rich colonial history, a vibrant arts scene, underwater parks rated among the finest in the world, and nature you won't find anywhere else. As hosts of Villa Vidalou in Jan Thiel we have spent years exploring every corner of the island. These are the 15 attractions we recommend to every guest — from UNESCO World Heritage in Willemstad to secret snorkel spots and rugged national parks.

1. Handelskade Willemstad — UNESCO World Heritage

The colourful colonial facades along Sint Anna Bay are Curaçao's most iconic image — and rightfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Handelskade is the best-known street, but also explore the back lanes of the Pietermaai district, which has grown into the hippest part of town with boutique hotels, galleries and cocktail bars in fully restored historic buildings. The Emma pontoon bridge can be crossed on foot in fifteen minutes and offers lovely views of the harbour. In the evening, Handelskade is illuminated and the atmosphere is unmatchable.

2. Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge

The floating pontoon bridge connects Punda and Otrobanda and is one of the most photographed spots in Curaçao. What most tourists don't know: the bridge is regularly swung to the side to let large ships pass through. That is an impressive spectacle — plan your visit to Willemstad long enough to catch it happening. A small free ferry runs when the bridge is open.

3. Jan Thiel Beach — the best family beach

Jan Thiel Beach is just two minutes' walk from our villa in Jan Thiel. It offers calm, clear water in a sheltered bay, several beach clubs (Zanzibar, Karakter) and a water park for children. The small entry fee keeps the beach from getting too crowded. You can snorkel directly from the water, but the best fish are found among the rocks on the western side of the beach.

4. Playa Knip (Grote Knip) — the most photogenic beach

If you visit only one beach on the west coast, make it Playa Knip. A deep bay with turquoise water, surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs, with a small beach bar and free entry. It is busier than Jan Thiel but absolutely worth it — arrive early (before 10 am) to find a good spot. The 45-minute drive from Jan Thiel passes a string of smaller, quieter beaches that also deserve a stop.

5. Playa Lagun — snorkelling with sea turtles

Playa Lagun is a small, intimate cove with a very special feature: green sea turtles come here daily to graze. Snorkelling with a sea turtle less than two metres away is an unforgettable experience — including for children. The beach is narrow and quieter than most, which makes the feeling even more special. Bring your own snorkel gear or hire it from the small shop at the beach.

6. Christoffelpark — hiking and wildlife

Christoffelpark covers the north-western tip of Curaçao and is the island's largest national park. The Christoffelberg (375 m) is Curaçao's highest point and offers a panoramic view across the whole island in clear weather. The climb takes one and a half to two hours and is demanding — start early (gates open at 6 am) to avoid the heat. The park is home to Curaçao white-tailed deer, iguanas, bats and numerous bird species. Essential for nature lovers and hikers.

7. Shete Boka Park — wild north coast

Shete Boka means "seven mouths" and refers to the seven natural inlets where the ocean surges forcefully between lava rocks. The blowholes are spectacular, especially in rough seas, and the coastal walking trails are well maintained. The park is also a protected nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles — in nesting season (June–September) you can watch nesting at night with a ranger. Only 10 minutes from Christoffelpark, so easily combined on one day.

8. Hato Caves — prehistoric caves

The Hato Caves are a limestone cave system on the north side of the island, right by the airport. A guide takes you through stalactites and stalagmites, fossils and rock drawings left by the original Arawak people, in a 45-minute tour. Bats hang from the vaulted ceilings. Inside it is pleasantly cool — ideal for an afternoon visit when it is 32 °C outside. The caves are accessible for children and less mobile visitors.

9. Curaçao Sea Aquarium

The Sea Aquarium is right next to Jan Thiel and is surprisingly well equipped. Besides the aquarium you can watch dolphins being fed (and join them in the water in some programmes), touch turtles, photograph sea stars and walk through the zoo area housing flamingos, crocodiles and parrots. There is also its own beach. For families with children this is a perfect half-day. Combine it with lunch at one of the nearby beach clubs.

10. Klein Curaçao — the uninhabited island

Klein Curaçao is an uninhabited islet about two hours' sail south-east of the main island. No trees, no people, no noise — just white sand, clear water and a ruined lighthouse. Sea turtles lay their eggs here. Several boat operators run day trips by catamaran, including snorkelling, lunch and an open bar. For many visitors this is the highlight of their Curaçao holiday. Book well in advance as trips sell out quickly.

11. Cas Abao Beach — the perfect beach day

Many people rate Cas Abao as the most beautiful accessible beach in Curaçao. Wide white sand, azure water, great snorkelling and professional facilities (sunbeds, restaurant, toilets, showers). The entry fee is low and keeps crowds manageable. Located midway along the west coast, about 35 minutes from Jan Thiel. Combine the day with a stop at Playa Portomari on the way back.

12. Pietermaai District — city life and culture

Pietermaai has become the vibrant heart of Willemstad. Fully restored colonial townhouses now house galleries, design hotels, cocktail bars, restaurants and shops. In the evening, Pietermaai is one of the liveliest nightlife areas in the Caribbean. Stroll along the main street, admire the street art, and end the evening with a cocktail on one of the rooftop terraces overlooking the bay.

13. Kura Hulanda Museum

The Kura Hulanda Museum in Otrobanda is one of the most moving museums in the Caribbean. It tells the history of the slave trade, African culture and the development of Curaçaoan society. The complex spans several restored buildings around a courtyard. For anyone who wants to understand the deeper history of the island, this is an essential visit.

14. Mikve Israël-Emanuel Synagogue

The Mikve Israël-Emanuel Synagogue in Willemstad dates from 1732 and is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. The sand floor — symbolic of the flight through the desert and clandestine worship in Portugal — is unique in the world. The adjacent museum tells the rich history of Curaçao's Sephardic Jewish community. A visit takes about 45 minutes and pairs well with a walk through Punda.

15. Blue Room & Tugboat — diving for every level

Curaçao has more than 65 registered dive sites and is regarded in the diving world as one of the best destinations in the Caribbean. Two absolute highlights: the Blue Room is an underwater cave near Kalki Beach (west coast), named after the blue light that filters through its entrance — reachable by snorkelling or freediving. The Tugboat at Caracas Bay is a sunken tug in just 5 metres of water, covered in coral and filled with colourful fish — ideal for beginners and snorkellers. Practical tips for your island tour

To visit all these places comfortably you will need a hire car — public transport barely reaches the tourist attractions. Plan no more than three or four destinations per day; the heat and distances make a long day tiring quickly. Willemstad deserves its own day. The west coast (Christoffelpark, Playa Knip, Cas Abao, Playa Lagun) is best combined in one long day. Hato Caves and Sea Aquarium are close to Jan Thiel and easily slotted in between. Klein Curaçao requires its own day.
